Middle School Students Compete in Video Contest Highlighting Manufacturing

Middle School Students Compete in Video Contest Highlighting Manufacturing

In partnership with the Franklin Center of Beaver County, Inc. and Catalyst Connection, the New Castle CANES Club is participating in the 2017 “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” student video contest.

Dream It. Do It. PA created its Student Video Contest – titled What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? – for the Lehigh Valley area in 2013 to generate excitement about manufacturing careers by giving students direct access to local manufacturers to find out why they love their jobs.  Teams of middle school students are provided video equipment and training and are matched with manufacturing companies and teacher coaches. The teams created short video profiles of their companies and the career opportunities they offer. By improving the image of these careers and creating awareness for them, the contest not only aims to sustain manufacturing careers, but aims to help them thrive.

The Lehigh Valley Student Video Contests have been so successful that other areas inside and outside of Pennsylvania are holding similar contests or are planning to hold contests. Dream It. Do It. PA supports these efforts by providing web hosting to these regional groups.

In the Pittsburgh region, the video contest is sponsored by Catalyst Connection. Catalyst Connection is a private not-for-profit organization headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which provides consulting and training services to small manufacturers in southwestern Pennsylvania, accelerating revenue growth and improving productivity.

CANES 7th grade students were matched with Berner International, which is the leading manufacturer of air curtain doors in the United States.  Headquartered in New Castle, Pa., Berner combines engineering, state of the art equipment and highly skilled workers to produce the most efficient, cost effective, reliable air curtains on the market.  Staff from Berner International visited the CANES Club students in October to introduce them to the company.  Students wrote storyboards and scripts for two videos, a three minute company profile and a two minute video featuring the various career tracks at Berner.  Students also visited Berner International in December for a plant tour and to film interviews with Berner’s professional and manufacturing floor employees.   The students also had to write a marketing plan describing how they were going to distribute the voting links to the public.  The CANES students participated in the contest through their STEM enrichment provider, the Franklin Center of Beaver County, a not-for-profit organization which provides in-school and out-of-school STEM and entrepreneurship programs in Beaver, Butler and Lawrence County.  The New Castle CANES club students were the only participants from Lawrence County in this year’s contest.

Popular voting for the student videos begins February 13th, 2017 and runs through February 17th, 2017.  Please visit http://dreamitdoitpa.com/contests/2017-pittsburgh-video-contest/ and vote for the video today!  Winners will be announced at Catalyst Connection’s Annual Manufacturing Reception at the UPMC Club at Heinz Field on February 22nd.
